We amplify the lived experiences of girls and gender-expansive youth with community-driven research and storytelling

Our approach

is more than just research; it’s about upending knowledge creation by centering the experiences and voices of girls’ and gender-expansive youth of color.

  • We employ girl and gender-expansive youth-centered research practices, including youth-participatory action research (YPAR) methods, that put the research design, data collection, and analysis, and meaning-making in the hands of girls and gender-expansive youth, especially those of color.

  • Research is conducted with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of girls and gender-expansive youth, as well as the sectors that seek to serve them.

  • Our programming and services, including our advocacy strategies efforts, are directly influenced by the recommendations that come out of our research. See our research in action here and explore our reports below.

  • All girls and gender-expansive youth who participate in our research and other programming are compensated.

Our SERVICES

In addition to leading and facilitating innovative community-centered and youth participatory action research (YPAR), AFG offers research and evaluation services to enhance your organization's capacity and knowledge. Our all-women-of-color research and evaluation team emphasizes community and connection in providing fee-based consulting and technical assistance for participatory research and transformational evaluation.

"The research that AFG has done, particularly with youth in Oakland Unified School District, has really helped reinforce my work
educating others when I'm talking about the experiences of girls of color."

— AFG Member, from our Comprehensive Eval Report in 2020

OUR YOUTH RESEARCH HUB

is girl and gender-expansive-centered, intersectional, and action-oriented.

We believe that girls and gender-expansive youth of color deserve the space to tell their own stories and inform solutions to challenges that affect their lives.
